She Went to Inquire of the Lord :: Quietly Through Thursday Link-up #24

I don’t have much to write on this Quietly Through Thursday. One, because it’s been a bit of a rough work week for me and I’m tired. And two, because God’s word, in all its simplicity, can speak profound volumes more than I ever can. So let me just get right to it.

While reading Quietly Through the Bible this last month I noticed three examples of prayer that I knew I needed to share with you here.

Example #1

And when (Jesus) had sent the multitudes away, He went up on the mountain by Himself to pray. Now when evening came, He was alone there. Matthew 14:23

Jesus made it a regular habit to be alone with the Father. In the passage in Matthew we see no other reason for this other than Jesus needed some refreshing time with his Father.

Example #2

But the children struggled together within (Rebekah); and she said, “If all is well, why am I like this?” So she went to inquire of the Lord. Genesis 25:22

Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, was pregnant with twins and, as you can imagine, there was quite a bit of commotion going on inside her womb. She was worried. So what did she do? She went away to inquire of the Lord. She went away.

Rebekah needed answers. She knew the only Person who could answer her was God, so she went away to a place where she wouldn’t be distracted, where she wouldn’t miss God’s voice.

Example #3

And Abraham stretched out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the Angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said “Abraham, Abraham!” So he said, “Here I am.” Genesis 22:11

Abraham, in the midst of the biggest storm of his life, the storm he thought would end his son’s life, could still hear God’s voice. Despite the storm, he was still listening, still waiting to hear from God.

These three examples illustrate our need for uninterrupted time in prayer. I know life is busy. I get that our calendars are full and our to-do lists are never ending, but if we don’t take time to learn our Father’s voice we may miss it when He has something important for us to hear.

Lord in heaven, I know that all you have to say is important. Each of your words record in the Bible and every word whispered to my heart by your Holy Spirit has been intended for my good and your glory. Please forgive me for not taking the time to listen for your voice. Please help me to see the lesser important things on my schedule that need to go so that we can spend time together. Show me when and where to get away to so that I will not be distracted. I don’t want to miss anything that you have for me. In the name of your son I pray. Amen.

  1. Kelli, I’m sorry you’ve had a rough week. Thank you for sharing the word God gave you this morning, and for hosting this linkup in spite of being exhausted!
I have always loved the book of Genesis! Probably my favorite book. And I totally agree, that we must take the time to be with the Lord, in order to hear His sweet voice. Thanks for the reminder this morning.
Prayers for you this week! <3

  2. Kelli, what a sweet reminder that we need to talk to God AND listen. I also loved what you said about the Word simply speaking to our hearts without need of embellishment! Blessings on your quietly through journey.
