The Humbleness of Advent

A response to Then Came Jesus by Lara Williams :: Week 1, Day 3

Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: After His mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit. Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins.” So all this was done that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying: “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.” Then Joseph, being aroused from sleep, did as the angel of the Lord commanded him and took to him his wife, and did not know her till she had brought forth her firstborn Son. And he called His name JESUS. (‭Matthew‬ ‭1‬:‭18-25‬ NKJV)

“…for He will save His people from their sins.” He will… He did… He didn’t have to. God the Son chose to step out of heaven and take on a human form in order to look out for our best interests.

“Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others” (Philippians 2:4 NKJV).  And thats exactly what Christ did.  He humbled Himself and stepped out of His home in Heaven and into darkness to be God with us…  to be the God who would rescue us — a rescue that would be finished on the cross.

Lord, each time I meditate on what You have done for me I can’t wrap my head around it. You, God of the Universe, Creator of Heaven and Earth, endured life and death here on earth for sinners like me.  You embarked on a rescue mission simply because… I dont know… I don’t have the words… I can’t fathom that kind of love…  I don’t understand that level of sacrifice or humility.  But as You bring me through this sanctification process, please show me how to be humble in Your sight (James 4:10 NKJV). In Your name I pray, amen.
